CAMBA Legal Services, Inc. (CLS) is the legal services arm of CAMBA, Inc. CLS provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers in the areas of consumer law, foreclosure prevention, immigration, housing law, and domestic violence assistance.  In addition to providing direct representation and providing legal advice and counsel to thousands of clients, CAMBA attorneys also engage in legislative advocacy, impact litigation in both state and federal court, provide community education and offer expert training on a wide range of issues, services that allow members of our community improve their lives.

Position: Supervising Attorney (Housing Unit)

What The Supervising Attorney (Housing Unit)Does:

  • Lead direct reports to encourage them to excel in their roles.
  • Provide supervision to staff and other supervising attorneys.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to clients, direct reporting staff, and program operations, making decisions in accordance with program policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Work with direct reporting staff to improve services through client feedback, training, and other appropriate mechanisms.
  • Conduct intake on the assigned week.
  • Record case notes and outcomes in a timely fashion in CLS’s data base.
  • Be accessible to CLS Housing staff and other supervising attorneys as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, staff, peers, supervisors, and funders.
  • Manage own time effectively and coordinate program activities to maximize efforts of the team.
  • Conduct client intake and assessment of client cases.
  • Interview clients and witnesses, as appropriate, in preparation for litigation and/or court proceedings.
  • Prepare legal documents, conduct legal research, negotiate work outs, etc. in Housing proceedings.
  • Gather evidence to formulate defense or to institute legal action on clients’ behalf.
  • Develop legal strategies, arguments, and testimonies in preparation for presentation of cases for trials, hearings, and oral arguments.
  • Draft and file motions, briefs, pleadings, legal memos, and appeals.
  • Provide legal seminars, trainings, and workshops for various organizations.
  • Attend appropriate trainings.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive client files, including up to date case note documentation.
  • Represent clients in courts and administrative agencies.
  • Provide advice and counsel in Housing litigation.
  • Prepare legal documents in Housing proceedings.
  • Research and analyze statutes, judicial decisions, legal articles, legal codes, etc.
  • Advise clients of their rights, laws, rulings, and regulations applicable to their case.
  • Research and interpret laws, rulings, and regulations as they relate to clients' cases.
  • Monitor clients' progress to ensure program outcomes are achieved.
  • Review written documentation related to clients' cases for accuracy, completeness, and clarity (i.e., court documents, case files, etc).
  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Provide required information for weekly, monthly, quarterly, semester, and annual reports to CAMBA management and/or to funders.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience Required:

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) degree
  • Admitted to the New York State Bar, Active and in Good Standing.

Other Requirements:

  • Minimum of three (3) years of applicable experience in housing law or a related field.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of, and experience in, civil litigation required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest work.
  • Excellent written & verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Strong Computer literacy in other Microsoft Office Suite products.

Compensation: $100,000-$131,000 annually
When salary ranges are listed, the range would represent the low and high end for the applicable position & program. The salary offered would be based on various factors unique to each program and candidate. This includes but is not limited to experience, education, budget and/or program size, internal equity, skills and other factors that may be required for the position and organization.

Status: Full-time (35 hours per week)
